A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, leveling buildings and causing a rising toll of fatalities. The epicentre was located near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city, and the earthquake was felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, and neighboring countries such as Vietnam and China.

Roads bent, buildings collapsed, and bridges fell from the earthquake, causing great damage. In Myanmar, over 1,700 people died, and nearly 3,400 were injured. With rescue efforts still under progress, Mandalay and Sagaing suffered the most. In Thailand, there are 18 deaths confirmed, with widespread damage recorded in Bangkok, including the falling of a skyscraper building.
The first earthquake was followed by a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock, which made the rescue operations much more challenging. Emergency responders are racing against time to save survivors from the debris, but communication breakdowns and destroyed infrastructure are hampering their efforts. In Bangkok, rescue workers are still looking for 76 people said to be trapped under the wreckage of a fallen skyscraper.
India, China, and South Korea have committed humanitarian assistance, including medicine, food, and rescue personnel. India has undertaken Operation Brahma, with 137 tonnes of aid delivered by air sorties and naval vessels. The United Nations has also made mobilizations of resources, with a $5 million relief package announced.
