The Impact of the Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake
Roads bent, buildings collapsed, and bridges fell from the earthquake, causing great damage. In Myanmar, over 1,700 people died, and nearly 3,400 were injured. With rescue efforts still under progress, Mandalay and Sagaing suffered the most. In Thailand, there are 18 deaths confirmed, with widespread damage recorded in Bangkok, including the falling of a skyscraper building.

Aftershocks and Ongoing Rescue Operations
The first earthquake was followed by a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock, which made the rescue operations much more challenging. Emergency responders are racing against time to save survivors from the debris, but communication breakdowns and destroyed infrastructure are hampering their efforts. In Bangkok, rescue workers are still looking for 76 people said to be trapped under the wreckage of a fallen skyscraper.
International Aid and Response
India, China, and South Korea have committed humanitarian assistance, including medicine, food, and rescue personnel. India has undertaken Operation Brahma, with 137 tonnes of aid delivered by air sorties and naval vessels. The United Nations has also made mobilizations of resources, with a $5 million relief package announced.

A Region in Crisis
Myanmar is already suffering from a civil war and has the added burden of managing a relief operation. The Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake has aggravated the humanitarian crisis, with thousands left homeless and in need of assistance. Reports indicate that the military junta has been carrying out bombing missions in some areas despite continuous rescue operations.
Global Solidarity and the Road Ahead
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has termed the situation as “a level of devastation not seen in a century“. Experts have attributed possible building design mistakes and poor material selection to prospective faults. The Thai government has investigated the accident; Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site.
