Woman Rescued After Falling into Gorge in Maharashtra While Taking Selfie

Pune, Maharashtra, India — August 4, 2024

In a harrowing incident, a 29-year-old woman, Nasreen Amir Qureshi, fell into a deep gorge at Borane Ghat in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Saturday. Qureshi slipped and fell while taking a selfie, plummeting into the 60-foot-deep gorge amidst heavy rainfall in the region.

The Home Guard and local residents sprang into action, mounting a swift and courageous rescue operation. Despite the challenging conditions, they successfully pulled Qureshi out of the gorge, and she was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Satara for treatment. As of the latest reports, her condition remains critical.

This incident shines a spotlight on the ongoing risks posed by excessive rainfall in the Satara district and the dangers of engaging in risky behavior near hazardous locations. In the wake of this accident, District Collector Jitendra Dudi ordered the temporary closure of tourist spots and waterfalls in the area from August 2 to 4 to ensure the safety of visitors.

However, the allure of these natural sites continues to draw thrill-seekers and social media enthusiasts, underscoring the need for heightened awareness and caution. A video of the incident, capturing the moment Qureshi fell, has gone viral on social media, igniting discussions about the potential consequences of pursuing dangerous activities for online fame.

The trend of risking one’s life for a viral selfie is not new, but it persists, often with tragic outcomes. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety over social media clout and the critical need for awareness and responsible behavior when exploring potentially dangerous locations.

As the discussion around the dangers of hazardous selfies gains momentum, the recovery and well-being of Qureshi remain at the forefront of the concerns of the local community and those touched by her story.
