Hair Extensions – How Long Will They Last

Before going for hair extensions, this must be one of your fundamental concerns. And why not? After all, pre-stretched hair for braiding extensions is not only a monetary investment, but it also needs time. While it’s a fun way to experiment with your tresses, you must make an informed decision. Well, we are here to help! Hair extensions can last anywhere from a day to a few months; it depends on the type of extension and your hair care routine. Read this article to know more, as the durability of your hair extension will be a key determinant of which type of pre-stretched hair extension you settle for.

The factors that affect how long your extensions will last are as follows:

  • The material of the hair extension (natural or synthetic)
  • Hair type and scalp health
  • Rate of hair growth
  • Installation type
  • Aftercare

Now let’s look at the different types of braiding hair pre-stretched extensions and their durability:

  • Tape-in extensions: these are applied by taping extensions on top and under your natural hair. Best suited for thin hair, these extensions are lightweight and easily adjustable. Since they last about four to eight weeks, it’s recommended that you visit your stylist every few weeks so that the tape-ins can be adjusted as per your hair growth. They can be installed quickly and also work well with damaged hair.

All you need to do to maintain this type of extension is to avoid detangling, brushing, or combing your hair directly after a shower. Also, note that applying heat and hair products on the tape directly can melt or weaken it. Removing the tape-ins involves using an alcohol-based spray to loosen the tape.

  • Sew-in extensions: this is a good choice if you’re looking for a long-term look, and are willing to shell out some extra bucks for it. The stylist will install this by first braiding your hair close to the scalp in cornrows. he/she will then sew the braids into your hair with a needle and a thread. One of the major benefits of sew-in extensions is that they keep your natural hair tucked away, protecting it from the damaging effects of the elements. They last for about six to eight weeks.

While these are considered more or less permanent extensions, we strongly recommend giving a break to your hair every once in a while, without which you’ll eventually experience breakage. Make sure your natural hair as well as sew-in extensions are well-conditioned.

  • Glue-in extensions: Lasting about four to eight weeks, these extensions involve applying hair glue directly to your hair wefts and the hairline. Though highly affordable and reusable, glue-in extensions are not recommended for thin or damaged hair, as both the application and the removal processes put a lot of stress on the hair.

Once the extensions are in place, you should avoid over-brushing those areas. Also, make sure you stay away from oil-based products.

  • Fusion hair extensions: for these extensions, the stylist aligns pre-bonded hair extensions to the root of the hair. This is followed by applying heat to the keratin bonds at the end of the extensions, which helps in attaching these to your natural hair. The application process can take 3 to 4 hours, and these extensions last up to three months. If you have thick hair, this is a great option. Besides, it is versatile enough to be styled in different ways.

Overwashing, over-brushing, or excessive use of heat-styling products can damage these fusion hair extensions, so it’s advisable to avoid these. If you want to flaunt these extensions for a longer period, we recommend getting them repositioned every few months, so that they match your natural hair growth.

  • Microlinks: Also known as microloop, microbead, or tie-in hair extensions, microlinks generally last for about three to four months. It is preferred by many since it blends with natural hair easily, and does not need heat, glue, or braids. Hence, your hair does not suffer from any unnecessary weight or damage.

Keep an extension-friendly brush handy, or you might end up tugging at the beads. Also, the beads should be kept away from heat, or the keratin that your stylist has slipped into the beads, might melt.

  • Clip-in: clip-in hair extensions last for only a day but are reusable, as these strands come with clips at the base. Just clip them into your hair and you’re good. While they are pretty easy to install, we recommend visiting a stylist if you want to customize your extensions. A stylist can pick out extensions that will best complement your hair type. These extensions are great for short-term use and have minimal impact on your hair.

It is also extremely easy to care for these extensions, you just need to keep them clean, avoid over-brushing and overuse of hot styling tools, and safeguard them from heat and other adverse elements. If possible, don’t wash your clip-ins as often as you wash your natural hair.

All said and done, hair extensions are definitely worth the time, effort, and money as they not only make your hair look longer and more voluminous but also give your entire look a whole new edge! With so many options, you’ll surely be spoilt for choice. Take your pick as per your hair type, the look you desire, and your budget. You’ll love every bit of it, no matter how long it lasts! If at all, you’re concerned about the upkeep, go for the low-maintenance styles, such microlinks or clip-ons.
